this morning, i watched a video
and my faith is americans is that much smaller now
two days ago, jubilee released a video of dean withers debating women who are part of the "maga" movement.
i don't typically watch jubilee videos. i feel like it's a great way to ruin my day—no matter the debate. i have found that a majority of people—no matter their opinion—are terrible at critical thinking and composure. it almost always resorts to insult, anecdote, delusion, raised voices, and "whatabout," which is incredibly disheartening.
dean isn't always exempt from this, but he definitively one of the better debaters i've seen.
and since i woke up early and was particularly bored, i decided to give the video a watch. why not? maybe people have changed. maybe people will be more open and recpetive today.
what an idiotic thought on my part. i should have just gone back to sleep.
i was brought to literal tears by these women. they had nothing. i don't even agree with them, and i could have made better arguments—which is something i consider to be a major problem for people these days.
i'm at the point where i think debate classes should be required.
if you're not familiar with how a debate class works, you don't get to pick a position. you have to defend the side you are given—whether you fundamentally agree with it or not. you are forced to see or figure out another perspective.
this skill is so incredibly important, and so many people do not have it.
i am well-aware that i went to a highly ranked school in a state ranked very high in education. i'm aware that i'm priveleged in that aspect. but as i listen to others, the gaps in our educational system become more and more apparent.
and that's not a diss on their opinions—but an observation based on their refusal to concede any points, lack of faactual evidence, and poor reading comprehension—which are things they could actively be working on. you're never too old to learn how to read or think, or really do any form of self–improvement.
which dean could also do. he did say "morons are morons," which i don't approve of. that doesn't encourage anyone to better themselves. people don't like being insulted. but—courtesy of the 'fact check' side bar, there were a few bits of misinformation on his end.
though it's worth noting the 'fact check' side bar proved him correct and his debaters incorrect much more often.
anyway, i'm going to take a nap or something because that was exhausting to watch.
